Photography Coursework
Photoshoot 4
This shoot was slightly different to the other shoots I have previously taken. With my previous shoots I have only painted a section of my models face but with this one I decided to paint her neck, chest and face so that she blended in. The fact that the background is white works well with this theme because the primary colour used is whit so you can only see the models facial features. I think this makes the photos more interesting because you have to really look into the pictures to see that there is a person there. Some photos are clearer than others. One improvement i could give my self is to paint the models hair white as well, this is because when she is facing the side you can see her dark hair, therefore it doesn’t make the photos as effective as they would be if everything was white. The composition of the photos is very weird, this works well because the detail on my models face is very unusual therefore it fits in with the overall theme. The lighting is perfect for what I wanted in this shoot, I wanted it quite light because the colour white is a very vibrant colour. With the main colour been bright it makes the black spirals stand out because they contrast with the white. To make the shoot more compelling I alternated with the angles. In some pictures I sat on the floor so that my model was looking down on me and in others I stood on a chair so that my model was looking up at me. This varied the shoot and made it more refreshing. I didn’t have a artist that this shoot was inspired by specifically but Laura Ferreira’s work is quite similar in the fact that she uses a lot of makeup. Ferreira produces work like the work I want to base my project on, she concentrates on themes and makeup and props to make her final images more creative. This is my more developed shoot yet because I’ve expanded from just making and extract of my shoot themed. I have even took this further and incorporated textile techniques into one of the images. I sewed onto the spirals so that the image becomes 3D. The final image is shown on the 'successful images' page.
Image Analysis
I followed up from my last shoot for this next shoot. I decided that I would like to paint more of my models face/body, so that is what I did. This has been successful because now I believe the shoot looks more professional. On the left is one of the photos from the shoot; I chose to display this photo because I like the composition of my model. I think that the positioning of her head and the direction that her eyes are looking in makes the theme come together. Overall i think that my model looks rather strange and the composition fits in well with this. The slight tilt in her head makes her look as if she is threatened by something that we cant see, this makes the photo more interesting because it makes the audience perplexed. They will be left wondering what the model is looking at after they have seen the photo. The directions of her eyes are back this emotion up because her eyes are wide which is what usually happens when you are scared by something. The face paint enhances this because the red line underneath her eyes highlight them and make them more obvious. The main colour used is white because that’s what colour the majority of her body is. The black pattern contrasts with the red lines under her eyes because that colour is very bright compared to the black. I chose to use a white background so that my model blended in. If I used the black background I don’t think this shoot would have been as successful. The lighting in this shoot is very bright which I think works well because white is a bright colour, However one side of the models face is darker than the other so next time I do a shoot I will concentrate more on this.
Image Analysis
This image is also taken from the same shoot but I have chosen a different photo to use. With this edit I have also included textile techniques because I have sewed into the image over the top of selected shapes. I chose to use red string because I think that red, black and white work well together, also I thought sewing over the black with red would be effective because those two colours contrast. Under the eyes I stuck to the same colour (red) but I made it more interesting by using sparkly string. I think the final image is successful because it is different to the rest of my edits. Due to the textile techniques being added to the printed image it has made it 3D. I think this image works well with the particular edit i have chosen to do because you can see all of the models facial features and the facepaint details. I chose to do shapes like these because they are simple to follow with things like sewing. Simple but effective. Some of the shapes are darker than others however, whih is something I would improve if i was to do this shoot again. Purely for the fact that they would stand out as being the bold ones as they are painted of the model in black which is a very bold colour. Here I have scanned the photograph in but on the original image you can see that the thread stands out. I belive in corporating art and textile techniques into photography work makes the final pieces more interesting and therefore attracts an audience and makes your work more noticeable. Which is why I would like to try other techniques such as dark room prints. The paper has gained a scruffy look from when it has been scanned, i think this also works well with the picture because the shapes as well arent neat, so it would defeat the object if the paper were to be neat.
